The laparoscope and surgical instruments are inserted through these ports. The surgeon then uses the laparoscope, which transmits a picture of the abdominal organs on a video monitor, allowing the operation to be performed.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"pb-space-line\"><\/div><div class=\"pb-space pb-clear-fix\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div><\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"pb-script-tag\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(document).ready(function($){$(\"#pb_line_CCAA7E12C50387ACC94FE136C09FE100\").PBLayout({\"bg_parallax_speed\":\"30\",\"bg_parallax_enable\":\"0\",\"bg_parallax_mobile_enable\":\"0\"},0);});<\/script><\/div><div id=\"pb_line_6E0523E87F8F47A0B7E652A3ABE926F1\"  class=\"pb-line pb-clear-fix\" style=\"background-repeat:no-repeat;\"><ul class=\"pb-layout pb-layout-100 pb-reset-list pb-clear-fix pb-main\"><li class=\"pb-layout-column-left\"> <div class=\"pb-space-line\"><\/div><div><h3 class=\"pb-header\"><span class=\"pb-header-content\">Operations performed by laparoscopic surgery:<\/span><\/h3><div class=\"pb-list pb-list-icon-type-gr pb-list-icon-name-A7195BB40C043D557FB0D7CBB97EBC9B\" id=\"pb_list_57691F79F01052BE800E86C198DFD64C\"><ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chirurgie-mallorca.com\/en\/general-surgery\/gallbladder-diseases\/\">Diseases of liver and gallbladder:<\/a> Cysts or tumors of the liver as well as the gallbladder can be removed with this technique.<\/li><li>Hiatus hernia and reflux disease (&gt; \u201cHeart-burn\u201d). This problem is solved by folding part of the stomach around the esophagus, thus creating the necessary tightness, which prevents stomach contents to escape into the gullet.\u00a0<\/li><li>Diseases of stomach and intestine. Stomach- or intestinal tumors can be dealt with by laparoscopic means.<\/li><li>Diverticulosis \u2013 Diverticulitis. Here the involved part of the colon is resected and the ends re-united by mechanical trans-anal anastomosis.<\/li><li>Right colectomy or Ileo-colectomy. During a right colectomy, the right side of the colon is removed. During an ileo-colectomy, the last segment of the small intestine - which is attached to the right side of the colon, called the ileum, is also removed. Used to remove cancers, noncancerous growths or polyps, and inflammation from Crohn's disease.<\/li><li>Total abdominal colectomy. Surgical removal of the large intestine. Used to treat ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, familial polyposis and possibly constipation.<\/li><li>Procto-sigmoidectomy. Surgical removal of a diseased section of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Used to treat cancers and noncancerous growths or polyps, and complications of diverticulitis.<\/li><li>Abdomino-perineal resection<b>.<\/b> Surgical removal of the anus, rectum and sigmoid colon. This is used to remove cancer in the lower rectum or in the anus, too close to the sphincter (control) muscles to allow resection and maintain continence of stool.<\/li><li>Surgical treatment of morbid obesity (gastric bypass or gastric sleeve). This reduces the size of the stomach and limits the amount of food that can be placed in the stomach.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"pb-space-line\"><\/div><div class=\"pb-space pb-clear-fix\" style=\"height:20px;\"><\/div><\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"pb-script-tag\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">jQuery(document).ready(function($){$(\"#pb_line_6E0523E87F8F47A0B7E652A3ABE926F1\").PBLayout({\"bg_parallax_speed\":\"30\",\"bg_parallax_enable\":\"0\",\"bg_parallax_mobile_enable\":\"0\"},0);});<\/script><\/div><div id=\"pb_line_66B51FF5684A1E14D181F66BD79E98FB\"  class=\"pb-line pb-clear-fix\" style=\"background-repeat:no-repeat;\"><ul class=\"pb-layout pb-layout-100 pb-reset-list pb-clear-fix pb-main\"><li class=\"pb-layout-column-left\"> <div class=\"pb-space-line\"><\/div><div><h3 class=\"pb-header\"><span class=\"pb-header-content\">What effect does laparoscopic surgery have on healing? <\/span><\/h3><div class=\"pb-space-line\"><\/div><div class=\"pb-space pb-clear-fix\" style=\"margin-top:-30px;\"><\/div><div class=\"pb-text\"><p>Surgeons for a long time believed that the magnitude of the operation inside the abdomen determined the magnitude of the injury to the patient. Consequently, it was expected that after large operations such as the removal of the gallbladder, the repair of a hiatal hernia or the removal of part of the colon, that patients would require months to require. Indeed, after these operations when performed through large incisions, patients were disabled on average six to eight weeks or even longer. When we began to remove gallbladders laparoscopically using 5mm and two 11 mm\u00a0incisions, we were surprised to find that the difficulty of removing the gallbladder did not influence the period of recovery. Recovery was determined by the size of the incisions. <strong>Patients that underwent laparoscopic surgery could usually leave the hospital is less than 24 hours after the operation and return to normal activity within one to two weeks.<\/strong> When we gained more experience and were able to perform other <strong>abdominal operations such as removing the spleen, repairing hiatal hernias and removing sections of the colon<\/strong>, we found the same thing.
